Okay, maybe not exactly like that... but is it okay if we find a way to have a laugh at least some of the time? Here's why...
Problems can feel so serious at times that they affect the way we experience our lives and the world around us. They influence the way we see ourselves and can highjack the way we respond to others. In some instances they've become so serious that they practically beg us to become just as serious as they are. And why wouldn't we? After all, we want to take them seriously, don't we?
Serious, absolutely! But if we become just as serious as them, are we really helping to lighten the load, or do we risk increasing it?
It's my experience that problems don't need our help to feel serious, they're serious enough as it is, which is why the way we talk about things in therapy shouldn't add to the weight. I believe that therapy should be fascinating, meaningful, and yes, even fun at times. The things we discuss won't always lend themselves to "fun" which is precisely why it's important to consider how we're thinking and talking about them. In some cases, just becoming aware of that can be enough to begin counteracting the problem's effects.
